Chapter 13
Chloe~
They finally cleared me to go home, and I was sitting in a wheelchair next to the nursesâ station as Callum sorted out some insurance and contact information.
At first, Mya was going to pick me up and take me home, but Callum had called me this morning, informing me that he was picking me up, and if I didnât want a scene worthy of a YouTube clip, I had better leave with him peacefully. After yesterdayâs display of destruction, I heeded his warning.
What surprised the hell out of me was Callumâs behavior. All morning long, heâs been patient and attentive. He had treated me ridiculously delicate when he had helped me out of the bed and into the wheelchair. Every move he made gave the impression that I was more fragile than expensive China. It was sweet, but confusing.
âYou ready?â he asked, looking down at me.
I just nodded. It felt like there was so much to say, but I couldnât find the right words to even know where to begin. I was still heartbroken over the loss of our baby, and sad to say, I just didnât trust Callum at this point.
It didnât matter how nice he was being this morning. Heâs been so horrible to me ever since the day I told him I was pregnant that his actions now seemed suspect. Maybe it was guilt.
Maybe he was actually feeling bad because he had never wanted this child and he was feeling guilty that, in the light of my obvious sorrow, he was feeling relieved that I had miscarried.
I didnât speak as Callum wheeled me out of the hospital and onto the front entrance curb where his car was parked. The second he moved to go open the passenger side door to his car, I grabbed my purse and hospital bag, then stood up. I was standing right behind him before he could even turn around, and I could tell by the look on his face that he wasnât happy about me making my own way without his help.
Well, screw him.
He hadnât wanted to be there for me while I was pregnant, so I didnât particularly want him to be there for me now that I wasnât. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized I didnât want him to be around me at all. I wasnât sure if Iâd ever be able to look at him again and not hate how heâd gotten his wish.
Callum reached out to support me as I lowered myself into the front seat, but I snatched my arm back, making it clear that I didnât require his assistance. Maybe I was being petty or spiteful, but the more concern he showed, the more pissed off I got.
How dare he care now.
How dare he pretend to give a shit now that he was free of a baby that I would have given my life for.
I heard him sigh, but he didnât say anything. He just waited for me to buckle myself in before shutting the door and walking around to get into the driverâs seat.
